Mt Buffalo Olives
Elisa and Colin, the original tree changers, left Melbourne in 1998, bought a 19 hectare paddock and immediately began creating their farm at the base of Mount Buffalo.
With Colin’s skills as an arborist, farming trees was the obvious choice. We commenced by planting a 10 hectare Eucalyptus Nitens (Shining Gum) plantation on the property, the olive grove quickly followed.
Elisa’s background in the creative arts and hospitality was a great fit for developing Karoonda and gourmet products for our Farm Gate tastings and sales.
The Olive Grove
With the help of a bulldozer, Colin carved out 22 terraces on a north facing ridge to create the olive grove. To ensure a complex blend of premium quality, extra virgin olive oil, 900 trees, of ten different varieties were planted.
The olives are hand harvested in May by a dedicated contingent of friends and family. They are pressed onsite and the multi-award winning extra virgin olive oil is bottled on the farm and available at the farm gate and selected local outlets.
Karoonda Olive Grove Retreat
Complementing the olive grove is Karoonda Olive Grove Retreat, a stunning cottage, with glorious views of the Ovens Valley and Victorian Alps.
Colin crafted the cottage from the remains of the original 3 story A framed Karoondah Ski Lodge at Mount Hotham.
Warm and cosy in winter and breezy in summer with the added bonus of a pool with the best view in the north east! Karoonda is pet friendly too!
